I’m making an attempt to absorb and process what is happening in the big picture of my country and politics every day but at the same time practice self-care. My biggest form of self-care, outside of regular exercise and spending time with the people I love, is making art. Words, pictures, colors…all engage my mind and take me away from the harsh realities, or help me to just get things off my chest.
It’s been incredibly sad to watch fear engulf people. Reactions become poorly thought out when motivated by fear. I believe when you are afraid, you are easily manipulated. This is why those in power seek to keep the masses dumbed down and in fear of the other.
A part of me feels like everything I care about is now up for sale to the highest bidder, including the air we breathe and the water we drink. The beautiful planet that I and my friends and family love to explore is now up for grabs to be stripped, killed, processed and sold off for the highest profit.
I am afraid for the future of our world, but I don’t live in fear. I expand my mind, voice my ideas and work to find hope in knowing that there are a lot more of me than there are of ‘them’.
Read a book. Go outside and meet someone new. Try to find a place you’ve never been before and open yourself to a new experience. These actions push away fear by opening our minds to the mosaic of color and wonder that humanity has to offer. Do not allow yourself to be manipulated so easily.
“I’ve learned that fear limits you and your vision. It serves as blinders to what may be just a few steps down the road for you. The journey is valuable, but believing in your talents, your abilities, and your self-worth can empower you to walk down an even brighter path. Transforming fear into freedom.” ~Soledad O’Brien
